Bell Family History

THE BELL FAMILY IN AMERICA

Many pioneers bearing the name of Bell were in
the provinces of New England as early as 1643,
and also in New Jersey before 1680 and in Penn-
sylvania about 1682. To Virginia several of the
name came direct from Scotland and settled in
the middle and southwestern parts of that colony
between 1642 and 1720. Most of these emigrants
were from Edinburgh, Linlithgow, Jedburg,
Paisley and Glasgow in Scotland; some from
northern England and southern Ireland and
others from the counties Londonderry and An-
trim in northern Ireland.

In England, Scotland and Ireland the Bells
were armor bearing. The heads of more than
thirty families of the name received grants of
arms, several of them as far back as the early
part of the sixteenth century.

That most of these families were derived from some common
stock is shown by the fact that a common feature
their crests a hawk belled. Bell of Berkshire
of their arms was three church bells and Buckinghamshire had: arms, — sable, three
wings expanded argent, beaked and belled or,
church bells argent, two and one, and three es- toiles or, one and two; crest, — a hawk with
with a string fiotant from the bells gules.

  1. Great story, now to find sources. I know Y. B. Booz wouldn't quite accept the additional info, she pretty much stopped at Beaver County, PA. I am a descendant of Leora Bell and Oliver Prichard. I see that a lot was gleaned from Issac's svc in War 1822.
